Cubic Boron Nitride (also written as CBN) is Boron nitride with a cubic crystalline structure which with diamond comprises the class of abrasives known as ultra-hard abrasives. With hardness second to diamond and no equivalent natural mineral, CBN is produced synthetically in a high temperature, high pressure process similar to synthetic diamond. CBN abrasives are also sold in US mesh size ranges just as diamond, these mesh sizes are defined by the mesh size of sieves used to separate the diamond particles. The sieve sizes are graduated and defined by the number of lines per inch of each sieve e.g. 50 lines per inch or 20 lines per inch. The CBN is then sold in overlapping mesh size ranges. This means for example in a sample of 40/50 US mesh CBN most of the material would fall between the 40 mesh and the 50 mesh sieve. What is the application of CBN? CBN is used as an abrasive mineral, a hard coating material, and machining insert. CBN's primary value in grinding, polishing for machining of ferrous materials and alloy which chemically reaction with diamond. CBN is applied to making resin, ceramic, metal bond grinding and electroplated tools and it also is used directly as abrasives suitable for grinding and polishing ferrous metal materials and alloy. Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride which is composite formed by sintering together carefully selected CBN particles at very high temperature and pressure in the presence of a metal/ceramic catalyst binder material. The end product is a solid, homogeneous layer of PCBN that displays a unique combination of hardness, toughness and thermo-chemical stability, properties which are increasingly important in a cutting tool material to meet the demands of machining hard ferrous materials.
